What Changes When US Stocks Trade 23 Hours a Day?

Nasdaq and NYSE Arca are scheduled to start an overnight session on Sunday, December 6, 2026, subject to the securities information processors being ready and to final exchange rule filings. The new session runs from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET, which stretches the US stock trading day to about 23 hours, from Sunday evening to Friday at 8 p.m. For traders, four things change: a new session that accepts limit orders only, a daily one-hour pause at 8 p.m., a new trade-date boundary at 9 p.m., and static price bands overnight. The regular 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. session and its auctions stay as they are.

When does 23-hour stock trading start, and what are the new hours?

The industry-wide go-live date is December 6, 2026, and every exchange document that sets it also attaches conditions. The SEC order approving Nasdaq's 23/5 rules, dated April 10, 2026, adds a Night Session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, Sunday through Thursday nights. Nasdaq's existing 4:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. schedule becomes a single "Day Session," and trading pauses every weekday from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. The week opens at 9 p.m. on Sunday and ends at 8 p.m. on Friday, so there is no Friday-night session.

NYSE-listed stocks trade overnight on NYSE Arca rather than on the New York Stock Exchange itself. According to the NYSE extended-hours FAQ (version 4.0, August 2026), NYSE Arca's new Overnight Session also runs from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., and the other NYSE Group equities exchanges keep their current hours. The launch there is subject to SEC approvals, the availability of the SIPs, and DTCC's modernization work.

The consolidated tape is being rebuilt around the same clock. The CTA Extended Trading Hours FAQ, updated September 29, 2026, sets a go-live of December 6 "dependent on Listing Exchange readiness and regulatory approvals," with a pre-launch period from November 8 to December 5 in which the overnight session runs in production with test symbols only. For a trader in Dubai in December, when New York is on standard time, the session runs from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time, and the pause falls between 5 and 6 a.m. hi2morrow's guide to US stock market hours for international traders converts the full schedule for other time zones.

What stays the same when US stocks trade 23 hours a day?

The regular session is still the market's reference point. Nasdaq's approval order lists what will not change under 23/5 trading: listing rules, membership and conduct rules, market maker obligations, ranking, display and priority rules, the Opening and Closing Crosses, and clearly erroneous protections. The Nasdaq global trading hours FAQ puts it more plainly: the 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. session, marked by the opening and closing crosses, "will continue to set the prices."

That has a concrete effect on the numbers traders watch. Trades executed outside 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., including overnight trades, carry the "T" sale condition and are not eligible to update the last sale price, although they do count in consolidated volume. NYSE Arca will keep publishing its official closing price after the 4:00 p.m. closing auction. An overnight rally can move quotes and extended-hours charts, but it does not rewrite the official close.

Several venues are not moving at all. Nasdaq Texas keeps its 7 a.m.–7 p.m. schedule, Nasdaq PSX stays at 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and Nasdaq's options exchanges keep their current hours, as does the existing 4:00 a.m. premarket start.

Which order types work in the overnight session?

Only priced orders are allowed. Nasdaq will accept limit orders between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. but not unpriced market orders, pegged orders, midpoint orders, or any order aimed at the opening or closing crosses. It also refuses the After Hours, On Open, and On Close time-in-force instructions. On NYSE Arca, Rule 7.34-E(T)(c)(1), adopted in NYSE Arca's filing SR-NYSEARCA-2026-53, rejects market and pegged orders designated for the Overnight Trading Session, as well as market-on-open, market-on-close, and limit-on-close orders, while limit orders marked IOC are accepted. hi2morrow's guide to which order types work in the overnight stock session lists every accepted and rejected order with the price checks that apply to it.

The session also opens differently. NYSE Arca starts at 9:00 p.m. with continuous trading rather than an auction and accepts orders from 8:59 p.m., and Nasdaq runs the Night Session on a separate instance of its trading system with its own order-entry ports. On NYSE Arca, the first auction of the new trading day is still the Early Open Auction at 4:00 a.m.; Nasdaq simply cancels any night orders left on its book at that time. Traders who already use limit orders in the evening will recognize the logic from after-hours trading; the difference is that the price you set now has to hold up through seven hours with no auction, as hi2morrow's article on whether the overnight stock session has an opening auction explains.

What happens to open orders at the 8 p.m. pause and at 4 a.m.?

Nasdaq clears its order book at both ends of the overnight session. Under the approved Rule 4120(a)(10), all orders on the Nasdaq book at 8:00 p.m. ET are canceled when the Day Session ends, new orders are accepted from 9:00 p.m., and every order still resting at 4:00 a.m. is canceled when the Night Session ends. Nasdaq's FAQ says unfilled overnight orders "may be re-entered at 4 a.m." for the next session, so an unfilled order does not roll into premarket trading on its own. hi2morrow's guide to what happens to open orders during the 8 p.m. trading pause follows day, GTC, and overnight orders through both cutoffs.

The pause has a job of its own. Nasdaq's filing uses the hour for maintenance, testing, and processing corporate actions that take effect the next trading day, and the Nasdaq FAQ calls the pause industry-wide. Some events need more than an hour. Pending SEC approval, Nasdaq plans to halt stocks with splits, dividends of at least 25% of the prior closing price, symbol or CUSIP changes, spin-offs, and mergers from 9 p.m. on the evening before the effective date until 8 a.m. on that date, so those stocks miss the overnight session entirely.

Exchange cancellations apply to orders on the exchange's book; a broker may hold, expire, or resubmit orders under its own rules. Check the order status after 8 p.m. instead of assuming an evening order carried over into the night.

Which trade date does an overnight trade get?

A trade executed between 9 p.m. and midnight ET gets the next calendar day's trade date, and a trade between midnight and 4 a.m. keeps its calendar date. NYSE Arca and Nasdaq describe this identically, and the CTA treats the whole 9 p.m.–8 p.m. window as one trading day. Settlement follows the trade date under the usual T+1 cycle. Weekends, holidays, and month-end cases are covered in hi2morrow's article on which trade date a 10 p.m. overnight stock trade gets.

Consider a limit buy for 50 shares of ABC at $30.00 entered at 10:15 p.m. ET on Monday, December 7, 2026, which is 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday in Dubai. If it fills at 10:40 p.m., the $1,500 purchase (50 × $30.00) carries a trade date of Tuesday, December 8, and settles on Wednesday, December 9. The NYSE FAQ gives the same pattern for November 23, 2026: a trade at 10 p.m. that evening has a trade date of November 24 and settles on November 25.

If the order sits on Nasdaq's book unfilled, it is gone at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday. The trade date matters beyond settlement, too: it decides which day a trade belongs to for margin and day-trading purposes, which hi2morrow's article on whether overnight stock trades count as day trades covers in detail.

Do price bands and trading halts apply overnight?

Yes, but in a simpler form than during the day. The SEC approved Amendment No. 27 to the LULD Plan on August 5, 2026. It sets static Overnight Price Bands from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, Sunday through Thursday. The lower band is 20% below the lower of two reference prices, the official closing price and the consolidated last round-lot sale as of 7:45 p.m., and the upper band is 20% above the higher of the two, with a minimum distance of $3.00 ($1.00 for stocks that closed under $1). Trading centers must have procedures that prevent trades outside the bands. hi2morrow's guide to whether price bands and halts apply in the overnight stock session works through the calculation, including the dollar floor for cheaper stocks.

For ABC, an official close of $30.00 and a 7:45 p.m. round-lot sale at $30.40 would put the overnight bands at $24.00 and $36.48. The bands do not move during the night, and unlike regular hours there are no automatic five-minute trading pauses when a stock reaches them. The listing exchange can still declare a regulatory halt; overnight, orders in that stock are rejected and it does not reopen before 4:00 a.m. The CTA carries regulatory halts into the next session. At 4:00 a.m. the bands are cleared, and no LULD bands apply again until 9:30 a.m.

The amendment is explicitly a first phase: the exchanges will study overnight trading and file a revised proposal later. If a Level 3 market-wide circuit breaker stops trading for the rest of the day, the NYSE FAQ says the market reopens at 4:00 a.m. the following trading day, not at 9 p.m.

Can you trade the overnight session at your broker, and what is still unknown?

An exchange being open does not mean your account can reach it. Only NYSE Arca members can trade there overnight, and everyone else goes through a member firm. Under NYSE Arca Rule 7.19-E, the firm entering the order and its designated clearing firm can block orders from executing in the Overnight Session. Nasdaq, subject to SEC approval, requires a clearing letter of guarantee before a member that clears through another firm can use ports enabled for 9 p.m.–4 a.m. trading. Whether you can trade at 11 p.m. is therefore decided by your broker's routing, session settings, and eligible symbol list. hi2morrow's guide to why you may not be able to trade stocks overnight at your broker explains each of those layers.

Overnight trading at brokers is not new. IBKR's US overnight session, for example, currently runs from 8:00 p.m. to 3:50 a.m. ET for US stocks and ETFs, hours that overlap the new 8 p.m. pause. As of September 2026, the exchange documents do not say how such broker offerings will line up with the new sessions, and each broker's hours, order types, and trade-date rules remain its own policy.

Several other points are still open as of September 2026. Both Nasdaq and NYSE Arca must file one more rule change confirming readiness before trading starts, and Nasdaq's rule requires it to be approved or effective first. The corporate-action halts and uniform rules on complex corporate actions are still pending, and the price bands are an interim design. Liquidity is the biggest unknown: exchange rules can open a session, but they cannot make market makers quote tight spreads at 2 a.m.

Alexander Styopin's professional view: the overnight session will be most useful to traders who can react to Asian and European hours without waiting for the US premarket, but it should be treated as a thin market with hard edges. Every overnight order is a limit order that can be canceled at 4 a.m. and can print outside the official price history. In the first weeks after December 6, keep sizes small, set limits you would accept as a fill, and read the next morning's confirmations for the trade date as well as the price.
